Stepping through video

Mac DVD Player

In the DVD Player App use the floating controller window, slide open the advanced controls. Frame by frame is the middle button in the left row.

Note: There is no option to go backwards by a single frame

Quicktime Player

  1. Start playing a video clip
  2. Use the left and right arrows in the keyboard to step backwards or forward by a single frame

Windows Media Player

Bringing up the frame by frame functionality on Windows Media Player is a little more involved:

  1. Start playing the DVD or video clip
  2. Right click on the Volume Slider
  3. Choose "Enhancements" and then "Play speed settings"
  4. use the left and right arrows at the bottom of the floating controller window

VLC

Under VLC:

  1. Start playing the DVD or video clip
  2. press the letter "E" (first time stops, after that it advances one frame at a time)

Note: There is no option to go backwards by a single frame
